Qualified Practice Nurses are able to advise patients who are newly diagnosed with diabetes about the condition, healthy lifestyle choices and their medications. The Practice Nurse is also able to refer you to the dietician, retinopathy screening (eye clinic) and the diabetic centre at Worthing Hospital. The Practice Nursing Team like to review all patients with diabetes twice a year.
Before your review you will need to have a fasting blood test 2 weeks before your appointment. Having your blood test taken 2 weeks before will allow time for the results to be entered into your records before your appointment. If you suffer from hypertension our Healthcare Assistant will monitor your blood pressure twice a year. A blood test and lifestyle review will be performed once a year. You do not need to make an appointment to check your blood pressure. We have a blood pressure monitor at the top of the stairs, which is available during our opening hours. Please pass the blood pressure results to reception, who have been trained to tell you if it is satisfactory or needs further monitoring. Patients who suffer from Hypertension should not use the blood pressure machine - please book an appointment to see the HCA.

COPD Clinic (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
The Practice Nursing Team are able to assist in the diagnosis of this condition and are also able to advise on the best way to manage it with lifestyle choices and possible use of inhalers best suited to the individual. We like to review everybody at least once a year, when we perform spirometry (a detailed measurement of your lung function). On the day of this review we would prefer, if possible for you NOT to have used your inhalers, as this will enable us to get a more accurate reading. Mental Health Reviews
It is important that patients with serious mental health illnesses are reviewed regularly by their GP. We aim to offer this review at least once a year and will discuss mental health, physical health and medication, as well as any other issues such as employment and other useful services. These reviews are offered even for patients who are looked after by a Psychiatrist.
Stroke Clinic (Also known as CVA / TIA)
The Practice Nursing Team like to review your condition and medication at least once a year. This requires a fasting blood test 2 weeks before your review appointment. Having your blood test done 2 weeks before will allow the nurse to discuss the results with you. This review is performed by our Healthcare Assistant, and requires a fasting blood test. Your blood test results will be reviewed by your doctor. HRT / Menopause Clinic
Patients 55 and over must have a 6 monthly review with the Nurse Practitioner or a Doctor, Patients 60 and over must see a Doctor for review. You must ensure that you keep up to date with cervical smears and breast examinations/mammography. Please return sooner if you have any concerns. All forms of family planning including the fitting of IUCDs (coils) and implants are offered by consultation during normal surgery hours and at our family planning clinic.

Cervical smears are strongly recommended at 3 yearly intervals for all women up to the age of 49 and 5 yearly intervals until the age of 65. Most smears are taken by our practice nurses, but if you prefer, a doctor will carry out the test. You will be recalled automatically by the practice when you are due to have a cervical smear. Please ensure you are in the middle of your menstrual cycle when you have your cervical smear.
It is never too late to stop smoking, if you are serious about stopping your doctor or nurse will provide help and information about our inhouse quit smoking clinics and local smoking cessation services. . Please contact reception for further information.
The surgery provides a freezing treatment for minor skin lesions such as warts, verrucas and benign skin lesions. It is necessary to see the doctor first to see if the lesion is suitable and if treatment is needed. This clinic usually takes place on a Friday lunchtime.
Child Health Clinic
We offer a mother and baby check at 6-8 weeks, this check is carried out by one of the Doctors at the surgery. It will give you the opportunity to discuss concerns you may have with regard to yourself or your baby.
Our Health Visitors offer a well baby drop in clinic on any Tuesday, at the Surgery between 9.30am-11.30am
We hold immunisation clinics (for children under 16) on a Wednesday afternoon between 1.45-3.30pm and Thursday mornings between 11.00 - midday. We aim to send out appointment times to our patients. The doctors provide antenatal and postnatal care in conjunction with the midwives. Our Health Visitors & Midwives are based at Stepping Stones Family Centre, Gardner Road, Fishersgate,Brighton, BN41 1PN. Tel: 01273 467980.
